Knights Swept At #16 Manhattanville

Hernandez records two hits in game two

Purchase, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team returned to action on Tuesday afternoon suffering 5-1 and 7-0 losses on the road at #16 Manhattanville. Sophomore Alyssa Hernandez (Middletown, N.Y.) finished game two with a pair of hits for the Knights.
 
Game 1: Mount Saint Mary 1 – Manhattanville 5
The Valiants got all the scoring they would need in the home half of the first, plating its first two runs of the contest. After Isela Casillas and Giovanna Ligget singled and doubled to start the inning they each scored on a passed ball and run scoring groundout, respectively.
 
Mount Saint Mary got on the board with its only run of the game and cut its deficit in half in the third frame when it strung together three hits. With two outs and no one on base, Amanda Almodovar (Goshen, N.Y.), Bridget Bennett (Gardiner, N.Y.) and Emily Lang (Westtown, N.Y.) all singled. Almodovar came home on the Lang safety to get the Knights to within 2-1.
 
Manhattanville answered back with a run in the home half of the third and closed out the scoring with a pair of runs in the fifth. Desiree Buboi scored on a sacrifice fly in the third and scored in the fifth on a passed ball. Evonne Torres scored the final run of the game on an infield single in the fifth.
 
Mount Saint Mary was outhit in the opener 8-4 with four different players recording a base hit. Almodovar, Bennett, Lang and Morgan O'Neill (Little Falls, N.J.) all singled for the Knights, with Lang driving in her team leading 15th run and Almodovar scoring her team best 18th run.
 
The Valiants were led by a 2-for-3 effort from Ligget who scored a run with Torres going 2-fof-4 with a run. Buboi scored a pair of runs for Manhattanville in the win.
 
Bennett suffered the loss in the circle for the Knights, working a complete game and allowing five runs on eight hits. She walked three and struck out one in falling to 5-4 on the season. Alycia Feeney scored the win for the Valiants, pushing her record to 11-1 after allowing four singles and striking out six.
 
Game 2: Mount Saint Mary 0 – Manhattanville 7
After being held off the board for the first three innings in game two, Manhattanville plated two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and two more in the sixth to pull away for the victory. Torres homered to lead off the fourth to plate the deciding run with Jordyn Boyd adding a run scoring double in the two-run fourth.
 
Liggett, Buboi and Torres all drove in runs with doubles in the fifth and Ali Orduna and Jessaca Delgado each drove in runs in the sixth to finish off the scoring in the game.
 
Manhattanville outhit the Mount 13-5 in game two with Torres finishing 3-for-3 with a double, home run, a run scored and two RBI. Liggett finished up 2-for-3 with a double, run scored and one RBI.
 
Hernandez finished up game two 2-for-3 for the Knights with Almodovar, Lauren Oury (Bethpage, N.Y.), and O'Neill adding the other base hits for the Mount.
 
Christen Hansen (Cypress, Calif.) suffered the loss and fell to 2-7 on the season after allowing five runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings. She did not walk a batter and struck out three. Aarin Hartenstein improved her record to 14-0 in the win, striking out five.
 
Tuesday's sweep drops Mount Saint Mary to 11-17 overall on the season. Next up for the Knights is a home Skyline Conference set with Sarah Lawrence on Thursday. First pitch with the Gryphons is set for 3:00 p.m.
