Knights Continue Home Stand Against League Rivals Sarah Lawrence, St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn

Knights look to even league record Wednesday

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Tennis team continues a season-long six-match home stand this week with Skyline Conference matches against Sarah Lawrence and St. Joseph's-Brooklyn. The Knights and Gryphons will square off on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m., with the Mount welcoming the Bears to Newburgh on Saturday for a 12:00 p.m. affair.
 
At A Glance: The Knights have won their last two outings and four of their last five overall to enter the week at 6-2 overall and 1-2 in Skyline Conference play. The Knights posted an 8-1 win over Rutgers-Newark on Sunday, sweeping the three doubles matches and winning the top five singles contests.
 
Mount Saint Mary features five players with at least four singles wins on the season, led by a perfect 8-0 mark from sophomore Jaden Tiriolo (Cheshire, Conn.). Tiriolo has won each of his outings this season at the third position and has teamed with senior Chris McGorty (Bellmore, N.Y.) at the top doubles flight for a 6-2 record.
 
Senior Shane Terry (Southampton, N.Y.) is putting together a strong season at second singles for the Knights, holding a 5-3 record after winning each of his last two outings. McGorty at first singles and Joe Ryan (Wantagh, N.Y.) at the fifth position are each 4-4 on the year, with Matt Gallo (Clark, N.J.) holding a 4-2 record in singles play at the fourth slot.
 
Overall, the Mount holds a 29-19 record in singles matches entering the week, but just a 7-11 mark against Skyline Conference rivals.
 
McGorty and Tiriolo lead the doubles tandems for the Knights with their six wins, with Gallo and Terry checking in with a 4-2 mark at the second position for the Knights. Ryan and David Gonzalez (Middletown, N.Y.) have won three of their seven matches together at the third position thus far.
 
Mount Saint Mary is 16-8 in doubles play through eight matches, including a 3-6 mark in Skyline Conference contests.
 
Scouting Sarah Lawrence: The Gryphons have played just two matches thus far, splitting a pair of Skyline Conference contests. Sarah Lawrence opened the season with a 9-0 loss to Yeshiva before rebounding with an 8-1 win over St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on April 7.
 
Four different players have picked up a singles win for the Gryphons, including a 1-1 mark from Matias Sanchez at the top flight. Francesco Lagioia at second singles, Garrett Hsuan at third singles and Alex Wah at the fifth position all hold a 1-1 record in singles action entering the week.
 
Sanchez and Hsuan have split their two matches at the top doubles flight with Wah and Divij Kapoor at second doubles and Lagioia and William Kellogg at the third position each going 1-0.
 
Overall, Sarah Lawrence is 5-7 in singles matches coming into Wednesday and are an even 3-3 in doubles competition.
 
A Look At The Bears: St. Joseph's enters a Wednesday match with Yeshiva at 1-4 overall on the season and winless in two Skyline Conference outings. The Bears have lost their last four outings, including an 8-1 defeat at Sarah Lawrence on April 7.
 
Four different Bears enter the week at 1-3 in singles play, including Daniel Vaitzman at the first position. Vaitzman and Denise Trerotola have posted a 1-3 mark at the top doubles flight for the Bears heading into Wednesday's contest with the Maccabees.
 
Overall, St. Joseph's holds a 6-18 singles record, including a 1-11 mark in Skyline Conference action. In doubles play, the Bears stand at 3-9 overall and 0-6 against league foes.
 
What's Next: The Mount will round out the home stand with non-conference matches against York (April 15) and Lehman (April 17) and a Skyline Conference tilt with Farmingdale State (April 16).
