Men’s Tennis Begins Busy Week Against Western Connecticut

Knights coming off non-conference win over Vaughn

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Tennis team begins a busy midweek on Monday when it welcomes Western Connecticut to Newburgh for a non-conference match beginning at 7:00 p.m. The contest with the Colonials begins a three match in three days stretch that includes a Skyline Conference tilt with Purchase on Tuesday and a non-league matchup with New Rochelle on Wednesday.
 
At A Glance: The Knights enter the week at 3-1 overall and 0-1 in Skyline Conference play and are coming off an 8-1 win over Vaughn on Saturday afternoon.
 
As a team, the Mount is 16-8 in singles matches with sophomore Jaiden Tiriolo (Cheshire, Conn.) leading the way with a 4-0 mark at the third position. Senior Shane Terry (Southampton, N.Y.) is also off to a strong start to the season with a 3-1 mark for the Knights at the second flight.
 
A trio of Knights hold an even 2-2 record in singles play, with senior Chris McGorty (Bellmore, N.Y.) splitting his four matches at the first position. Joe Ryan (Wantagh, N.Y.) and David Gonzalez (Middletown, N.Y.) also check in with 2-2 marks and the fifth and sixth positions, respectively.
 
In doubles play, the Mount is led by a 3-1 record at the top position by McGorty and Tiriolo, with Gonzalez and Ryan holding a 2-2 mark at the third flight for the Knights.
 
Last Time Out: The Knights got back into the win column on Saturday with an impressive 8-1 non-conference win over visiting Vaughn.
 
The Mount got off to a good start on Saturday, taking the first and third doubles matches to open a 2-1 lead. The top pair McGorty and Tiriolo eased to an 8-0 victory, while the third doubles pair Ryan and Gonzalez battled to an 8-6 victory.
 
In the singles matches, Mount Saint Mary dropped just 11 games over the six matches. Tiriolo at the third flight and Ryan at fifth singles posted 6-0, 6-0 victories for the Knights, while McGorty scored a 6-0, 6-1 win at the top position.
 
Terry earned a 6-2, 6-0 win at second singles, Matt Gallo (Clark, N.Y.) picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win at the fourth position and Gonzalez posted a 6-3, 6-2 win at sixth single for the Knights.
 
Scouting Western Connecticut: The Colonials come calling on Monday winless in three matches thus far and are coming off a 7-2 loss to UMass-Dartmouth on Saturday. Will Hogan and Chauncey Allers picked up singles wins for Western Connecticut in the match.
 
Hogan leads the way for the Colonials through three matches with a 3-0 record at the top position, while Allers checks in at 2-1 at the second position. Matthew Carino is also off to a good start for Western Connecticut, entering the week at 2-1 at the second flight.
 
In doubles play, the duo of Carino and Jay Kilcourse have the team's lone win after posting an 8-4 win over FDU-Florham on March 29.
 
Previewing Purchase: The Panthers are unbeaten in three outings to begin the spring and are coming off a 9-0 blanking of John Jay on March 15.
 
Courage Crawford enters the week at a perfect 3-0 at the top singles flight for the Panthers, with James Ham at third and Isaac Jones at the second slot also entering the week at a perfect 3-0 for Purchase.
 
In doubles action, Crawford and Jones stand at 2-0 at the top position with Ham and Stuart also holding a 2-0 record together through three contests.
 
A Look At CNR: The Blue Angels will be making their season debut on Wednesday against the Knights.
 
What's Next: Mount Saint Mary will continue a stretch of five matches in seven days on Saturday and Sunday when it takes on league rival St. Joseph's-L.I. on the road on Saturday before hosting Rutgers-Newark on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
