Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Tennis team returns to action for the first time since October when it travels to Skyline Conference Preseason Favorite Yeshiva on Monday night before hosting non-conference foe Vaughn on Saturday. The Skyline Conference opener with the Maccabees is scheduled for 8:00 p.m., while the spring home opener is set for 1:00 p.m. in Newburgh.
At A Glance: The Knights enter Monday night's tilt with the Maccabees at 2-0 overall after topping Bard 8-1 and Sage 6-3 during the fall.
Charles Benfer (Milton, N.Y.), Jaiden Tiriolo (Cheshire, Conn.) and
Shane Terry (Southampton, N.Y.) are all unblemished through two matches as the Mount has posted a 9-3 mark in singles action thus far. Terry enters the week unbeaten at the second position, with Tiriolo winning both his contests at the third position and Benfer holding a 2-0 mark at the fourth flight.
In doubles action, the Knights have a pair of duos standing at 2-0 on the season.
Chris McGorty (Bellmore, N.Y.) and Tiriolo have won both their matches at the top doubles flight thus far, while Benfer and Terry hold a perfect 2-0 mark at the second position heading into the conference opener.
A Look At Yeshiva: The Maccabees, who have won the last five conference crowns, enter Monday's tilt at 5-5 overall and are coming off a tight 5-4 loss at Wilkes on March 17.
Yeshiva features 10 different players with at least one singles win, led by a 6-4 mark from Aaron Cohen at both the first and second positions. Cohen is 2-2 at the top flight for the Macs and 4-2 at the second position this far.
Alexander Kalb is putting together a strong start to the season with a 5-3 mark covering three different flights. He holds a 1-1 mark at the fourth spot, a 4-1 record at fifth singles and is winless in one match the sixth slot.
In doubles action, the Macs are led by their top two pairs who have combined to go 10-6. The duo of Cohen and Lior Brik have split 10 matches at the top position, while Mikey Ozery and Amram Wahnon have dominated the second flight with a 5-1 record.
Scouting Vaughn: The Warriors will begin the 2019 season on Saturday against the Knights and are coming off a 2018 campaign that saw them go 2-3 overall.
What's Next: The Vaughn match begins a four match home stand for the Knights that will continue with home contests against Western Connecticut on April 1, Purchase on April 2 and New Rochelle on April 3. The Knights will close out a busy week at St. Joseph's-L.I. on April 6 before returning home for a non-conference match with Rutgers-Newark on April 7.
