Swimming Opens Skyline Conference Competition At Sarah Lawrence

Knights in search of first wins of the season

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's and Women's Swimming teams open Skyline Conference competition on Saturday when they travel to Bronxville to take on Sarah Lawrence. Events with the Gryphons are scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
 
MSMC Men At A Glance: The Mount was in action for the first time in 2019-20 last weekend when it traveled to the College of Staten Island and suffered a 155-86 loss to the Dolphins.
 
Robert Kohlus (Wading River, N.Y.) opened the season by posting victories for the Knights in the 200-yard butterfly, the 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly against the Dolphins. The 200-yard butterfly win came in 2:05.27, with the freestyle and 100-yard butterfly victories coming in 52.39 seconds and 56.31 seconds, respectively.
 
Sophomore Joseph Tagliareni (Hackettstown, N.J.) also had a strong start to the season on Saturday, posting a pair of victories and picking up a runner-up finish. Tagliareni was victorious in the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard backstroke in times of 1:01.22 and 2:16.45. He went on to finish second in the 200-yard individual medley, showing a time of 2:17.74.
 
Junior Matt Gallo (Clark, N.J.) turned in a strong meet on Saturday, collecting a runner-up finish and a pair of third place finishes. Gallo took second in the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:20.09 and placed third in the 100-yard and 50-yard freestyle events with times of 1:04.52 and 26.17 seconds.
 
Senior Sam Kenney (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) took third for the Knights in both the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke races, while Philip Crandall (Ravena, N.Y.) placed third in the 200-yard freestyle and Tyler Williams (Middlebury, Conn.) touched out third in the 200-yard individual medley in his collegiate debut.
 
Skyline Conference Accolades: After posting three individual wins against the Dolphins, Kohlus was named the Skyline Conference Swimmer of the Week on Monday.
 
MSMC Women At A Glance: The Knights took to the pool for their first dual meet of the season on November 2 and dropped a 143-101 decision to the College of Staten Island.
 
Shayla McCarroll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) had a strong afternoon for the Knights, scoring wins in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events. Her initial win of the day came in a time of 1:07.08 with her 200-yard victory showing a time of 2:27.42.
 
Fellow junior Daley O'Keefe (Glastonbury, Conn.) scored a win for the Knights in the 200-yard freestyle and also picked up a runner-up finish in the 200-yard backstroke. He win in the second individual event of the day came in a time of 2:15.31 and she followed McCarroll in the backstroke race, showing a time of 2:33.56.
 
Senior Taylor Hollis (East Hartford, Conn.) and junior Katie Barber (Shelton, Conn.) also turned in strong swims on Saturday with each picking up a pair of second place finishes. Hollis was the runner-up in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events in 1:24.65 and 3:06.03, while Barber earned second place points in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:30.49 and the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:11.43.
 
Samantha Gangemi (Staten Island, N.Y.) collected a second place finish in the 100-yard butterfly on Saturday with a time of 1:11.41, with a pair of newcomers picking up runner-up points as well for the Knights. Freshman Emily Gursky (Oakville, Conn.) finished second in the 100-yard backstroke and took third in the 50-yard freestyle, while fellow freshman Kristen Dwight (Newfield, N.J.) placed second, just ahead of Gursky, in the 50-yard freestyle.
 
The Mount started the afternoon in strong fashion with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of McCarroll, Hollis, Barber and O'Keefe topped the field with a winning time of 2:10.01.
 
Conference Recognition: Following a second place finish in the 100-yard backstroke and a third place showing in the 50-yard freestyle, freshman Emily Gursky (Oakville, Conn.) was named the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday.
 
What's Next: The Knights continue the 2019-20 season on November 16 when they travel to Wilkes.
