Women’s Tennis Returns To Action Tuesday Against Hartwick

Knights took to reach .500 mark for first time in 2019

Newburgh, N.Y. – Coming off a 9-0 sweep of league rival Sarah Lawrence on Saturday, the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team returns home on Tuesday to play host to non-conference opponent Hartwick. Matches with the Hawks on campus are scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
 
At A Glance: The Mount posted an impressive 9-0 victory on the road at Sarah Lawrence Saturday afternoon, improving to 3-4 overall on the season and to 2-1 in Skyline Conference play.
 
Michelle Carnovale (Massapequa, N.Y.) leads the Mount in singles victories on the season with a 6-1 record at the top flight and has moved into sole possession of sixth place all-time at the Mount with her 42nd career singles win on Saturday against the Gryphons.
 
Junior Jessalyn Goetz (Bethel, N.Y.) and sophomore Katie Murray (Highland Mills, N.Y.) each rank second on the team in singles wins with five apiece. Goetz holds a 5-2 overall record, winning four times at the fifth position and once at the sixth slot, while Murray is also 5-2 with each of her five victories coming at the fourth flight.
 
In doubles play, Murray and Katrina Imperio (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) hold a perfect 4-0 record at third doubles for the Mount, while Carnovale and Victoria Clay (Saint James, N.Y.) have three wins at the top position.
 
Last Time Out: In singles play against Sarah Lawrence, the Knights saw a pair of players win for the first time this season. Clay won her first match at the second flight for the Mount, battling to a 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-5) victory, while Vernon was victorious for the first time at the third slot with a 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-5) triumph.
 
Carnovale improved to 6-1 on the season and scored her 42nd career singles victory, moving her into sole possession of sixth place on the Mount's all-time win list. She eased to a 6-0, 6-3 victory at the first position for the Mount.
 
Goetz continued the strong start to her season on Saturday with a 6-1, 6-2 fifth slot victory, moving her to 5-2 on the season, and Murray improved to 5-2 on the year with a 6-0, 6-1 fourth singles win for the Knights. Gracie Monahan (Deer Park, N.Y.) moved to 2-1 on the season with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the sixth position on Saturday. 
 
In doubles play, the Mount won each of the three contests, with Murray and Imperio posting an 8-3 victory at the third slot and Carnovale and Clay cruising to an 8-1 first singles victory. Vernon and Goetz won at the second position 8-5 for the Knights.
 
Previewing the Hawks: Hartwick comes calling on Tuesday with a 1-7 overall record, dropping each of its last five contests. The Hawks lone win to date came in an 8-1 triumph over SUNY Delhi on September 4.
 
Victoria Wilson and Skylar Watts lead the Hawks with two singles wins apiece. Wilson has won twice at the top position, while Watts has scored both of her victories at the second slot.
 
In doubles play, Watts and Wilson have teamed up for one win for the Hawks at the top position.
 
Hartwick has posted an 8-40 record in singles matches to date and a 3-21 mark in doubles competition.
 
Recent History: In the team's latest matchup, the Knights dropped a 6-3 decision to the Hawks in Newburgh on October 5, 2017.
 
What's Next: The Knights will play home matches on both Saturday and Sunday, welcoming league rival Farmingdale State to Newburgh on October 5 before hosting non-conference opponent Vaughn on October 6.
