Swimming Returns To Action Saturday At USMMA

Knights back in action for the first time in 2019

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's and Women's Swimming teams will be in action for the first time in 2019 and return to Skyline Conference competition on Saturday when they travel to the United States Merchant Marine Academy for a 1:00 p.m. meet with the Mariners.
 
MSMC Men At A Glance: The Mount Saint Mary Men enter Saturday's meet at 2-3 overall on the season and 1-1 in Skyline Conference action. The Mount is back in the pool for the first time since dropping a 164-42 conference decision to Maritime on December 7.
 
Robert Kohlus (Wading River, N.Y.) continued his strong junior seasons for the Knights at Maritime with second place finishes in both the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle. Michael Neugebauer (Newburgh, N.Y.) also had strong swims in a pair of freestyle races, taking second in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events. Kohlus finished up with times of 1:52.52 and 5:11.82, while Neugebauer touched out in times of 23.09 and 52.56 seconds.
 
Sophomore Matthew Gallo (Clark, N.J.) picked up a second and a third place finish for the Knights, while P.J. Ramsey (Plantsville, Conn.) and Sam Kenney (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) each turned in third place showings. Gallo took second in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:58.74 and third in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:05.17. Ramsey finished up third in the 100-yard butterfly in 59.27 seconds, while Kenney finished up the 100-yard breaststroke race in 1:12.30.
 
MSMC Women At A Glance: The Women's squad heads to Kings Point on Saturday unblemished on the season at 6-0 overall and 2-0 against league rivals. In their last outing, the Knights edged Maritime 108-102 on the road on December 7.
 
Katie Barber (Shelton, Conn.) had a dominating night for the Mount in winning both the 200-yard individual medley and the 500-yard freestyle. Barber took the individual medley race by nearly eight seconds with a time of 2:28.64 and bested the field by almost seven seconds in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:30.79.
 
Kyra McNamee (Yonkers, N.Y.) had another strong night in the freestyle events, taking the 1,000-yard and 100-yard races. The distance victory came in a time of 11:51.50, while the 100-yard triumph came in a time of 58.14 seconds, with McNamee the only swimmer to break the 60 second mark.
 
Sophomore Shayla McCarroll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) had a strong evening for the Knights, scoring a win in the 100-yard breaststroke and a second place finish in the 100-yard butterfly. The win came in 1:18.54, while the runner-up finish came in a time of 1:09.64.
 
Samantha Gangemi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished the night with a second and a third place finish for the Mount, with Jillian Bunch (Newburgh, N.Y.) and Emily Crowley (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) each scoring runner-up finishes. Gangemi took second in the 100-yard backstroke and third in the 100-yard butterfly, with Bunch and Crowley earning runner-up points in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke, respectively.
 
USMMA Men At A Glance: The Mariners, who have won each of the last two Skyline Conference Championships, enter Saturday's meet at 4-0 overall and in conference action heading into a non-conference meet with NYU on Friday.
 
The Mariners scored a pair of Skyline Conference wins on December 8 in their last outing, topping Sarah Lawrence 117-52 and Purchase 123-34. USMMA won 10 of the 11 events contested in the meet, with two-time defending Skyline Conference Swimmer of the Year Nolan Monahan winning the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 22.11 seconds.
 
USMMA Women At A Glance: The Mariners' women's squad has also won the last two Skyline Conference crowns and enters Saturday's contest at 7-0 overall and 6-0 against league rivals after posting a 56-39 non-conference in against Hunter on January 8.
 
The Mariners won all but two events on the night against the Hawks. Picking up multiple individual victories were juniors Meika Gathy (Waterford, Conn.) and Erica Lou (Flushing, N.Y.), as well as sophomore Victoria Kirshner (Santa Clarita, Calif.). Gathy won the 1000 freestyle (11:43.28) and the 500 free (5:41.46); Lou touched first in the 400 individual medley (5:02.03) and the 200 breaststroke (2:39.45); and Kirshner triumphed in the 50 free (25.80) and the 100 free (56.84). 
Also touching first on the night for the Mariners were freshman Chase Massey (Friendswood, Texas) in the 200 free (2:09.33) and classmate Samantha Hunt (Franklin, Texas) in the 200 butterfly (2:24.82). 
 
Additionally, the 200 medley relay team of Massey, Lou, Kirshner and Hunt led off the meet with a victory in 1:58.89. 
 
What's Next: After Saturday's road meet, the Mount travels to FDU-Florham on January 18 before closing the home schedule against Wells, Baruch and Purchase a day later.
