Brooklyn, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team opened the 2018 season on Friday and suffered a hard fought 5-4 loss on the road at Pratt.
Michelle Carnovale (Massapequa, N.Y.) opened the season with a singles win with a pair of newcomers also finding the win column for the Mount.
Carnovale, who now holds a 28-6 singles record in her career, outlasted her opponent from the Cannoneers on Friday at the top flight. She posted a tough 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win for the Knights to move to 1-0 on the season.
In addition to the first singles win, the Knights received victories from
Sarah Canzone (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and
Katie Murray (Highland Mills, N.Y.) in their collegiate debuts. Canzone scored a 6-2, 6-1 win at the fifth position on Friday, while Murray posted a 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 win at the sixth slot for the Knights.
In doubles action on Friday, the third pair of Canzone and
Julia Lorenzo (Emerald Isle, N.C.) eased to an 8-1 win in their initial contest together, while the top team of Carnovale and
Victoria Clay (Saint James, N.Y.) suffered a tight 9-8 (7-2) defeat.
At 0-1 on the season, Mount Saint Mary opens the home schedule on Thursday when it plays host to Western Connecticut. First serve with the Colonials is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
