Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team opened Skyline Conference play on Wednesday with a convincing 9-0 home win over Sarah Lawrence. Junior
Michelle Carnovale (Massapequa, N.Y.) and freshman
Katie Murray (Highland Mills, N.Y.) each moved to 4-0 in singles play in the victory.
Carnovale remained unblemished at the top flight on Wednesday, easing to a 6-1, 6-0 win for the Knights. Murray matched the team-high in singles wins with four for the Knights following a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at the sixth position.
Victoria Clay (Saint James, N.Y.) won her second straight singles contest, topping her opponent from Sarah Lawrence 6-1, 6-0 at the second slot.
Antionetta Capone (Howard Beach, N.Y.) added a 6-1, 6-0 third singles win, while
Miyanna Vernon (Liberty, N.Y.) and
Sarah Canzone (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) contributed 6-0, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-0 wins at the fourth and fifth positions.
Mount Saint Mary dropped just two games over the three doubles matches against the Gryphons with the first and third pairs posting 8-0 victories. Carnovale and Clay moved to 2-2 on the season at first doubles, while Canzone and
Julia Lorenzo (Emerald Isle, N.C.) won their third match together at the third position. Capone and Vernon moved to 2-1 as a pair with an 8-2 second doubles victory.
Wednesday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 3-1 overall on the season and to 1-0 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Knights is a non-conference match with Ramapo on September 25. First serve with the Roadrunners in Newburgh is set for 6:00 p.m.
