Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team cruised to its second straight win on Sunday, blanking the College of New Rochelle by a score of 9-0. Four Knights picked up their first singles win of the season, including freshman
Elizabeth Brennan (Wantagh, N.Y.) who posted her first career win.
The Mount was never challenged in the match, dropping only two doubles game in opening an early 3-0 lead. The top pair of
Michelle Carnovale (Massapequa, N.Y.) and
Victoria Clay (Saint James, N.Y.) earned their first win of the season at the top doubles flight with an 8-1 win, joining
Sarah Canzone (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and
Julia Lorenzo (Emerald Isle, N.C.) who also posted an 8-1 win at the second position.
Emily Quinn (Montgomery, N.Y.) and
Jessalyn Goetz (Bethel, N.Y.) saw their first action of the season together and posted an 8-0 win at third doubles.
In the six singles matches, the Mount dropped just five games in closing out the sweep. Carnovale improved to 3-0 on the season at the top flight with a 6-1, 6-1 with Clay earning her first victory of the season at the second position with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph.
The Knights posted 6-0, 6-0 sweeps in the third through sixth singles matches with
Antionetta Capone (Howard Beach, N.Y.) at the third spot,
Miyanna Vernon (Liberty, N.Y.) at the fourth position and Brennan at sixth singles all scoring their first victories of the year.
Katie Murray (Highland Mills, N.Y.) moved to 3-0 in the singles play on Sunday, winning for the first time at the fifth slot for the Knights.
At 2-1 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary continues a five match home stand on Wednesday when it opens Skyline Conference play against Sarah Lawrence. First serve with the Gryphons is set for 6:00 p.m.
