Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Tennis team opened the 2018 Fall season on Saturday with an 8-1 win over visiting Bard. The Knights won each of the three doubles matches and
David Gonzalez (Middletown, N.Y.) was one of five singles winners, claiming his first career victory.
The Mount got off to a 3-0 start on Saturday, cruising to three doubles points. The top pair of Christopher McGorty (Bellmore, N.Y.) and
Jaden Tiriolo (Cheshire, Conn.) posted an 8-3 win, with
Shane Terry (Southampton, N.Y.) and
Charles Benfer (Milton, N.Y.) blanking their rivals at the second position, 8-0. The third pair of
Joe Ryan (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Gonzalez eased to an 8-1 win at the thirds position for the Knights.
In singles play, the Knights took the second through sixth competitions to close out the win. Terry took a 6-2, 3-0, retired decision at the second slot with Tiriolo earning a 6-1, 6-0 win for the Knights at the third position.
Benfer opened the season with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking at the fourth position with Ryan and Gonzalez finishing off the win with 6-0, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-2 victories, respectively.
At 1-0 on the season, Mount Saint Mary continues the fall schedule on September 25 against Ramapo.
