Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team scored its first win of the season on Thursday with a hard fought 5-4 win over visiting Western Connecticut. Three Knights, including junior
Michelle Carnovale (Massapequa, N.Y.), moved to 2-0 in singles action with the win.
Carnovale, who moves to 27-8 in singles action in her career, won her second match in as many outings at the top flight on Thursday evening. She outlasted West Conn's Emma Chapman by scores of 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.
A pair of freshmen continued their strong start to the season with
Sarah Canzone (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and
Katie Murray (Highland Mills, N.Y.) scoring victories at the fifth and sixth singles positions. Canzone moved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-3, 6-4 fifth single triumph, while Murray remained unbeaten on the season after cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 sixth single wins.
Mount Saint Mary got the match off to a good start on Thursday, winning two of the match's three doubles contests.
Antionetta Capone (Howard Beach, N.Y.) and
Miyanna Vernon (Liberty, N.Y.) battled to a 9-7 second position win, while Canzone and
Julia Lorenzo (Emerald Isle, N.C.) posted an 8-5 win at third doubles to get the Mount out to a 2-1 lead.
At 1-1 on the season, Mount Saint Mary continues a five match home stand on Sunday when it plays host to the College of New Rochelle. Match time with the Blue Angels is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
