Pavlik Nets Overtime Game Winner At Old Westbury

Freshman scored with three seconds left in extra frame

Old Westbury, N.Y. – Senior Christina Ryan (Franklin Square, N.Y.) tied the game with just under six minutes left in regulation and freshman Morgan Pavlik (Monroe, Conn.) scored in the closing seconds of overtime as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team outlasted Old Westbury on the road Saturday afternoon by a score of 16-15.
 
After the two teams traded goals to open the game, the Knights put together a 4-1 scoring run to move in front 5-2. Ryan and Courtney Condron (Franklin Square, N.Y.) scored goals with the man advantage for the Knights over the run.
 
The Panthers closed to within a goal three times over the final 7:38 of the first half, but goals from Liz Halpin (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) and Meghan Cumming Massapequa Park, N.Y.) in the last nearly five minutes of the half sent Mount Saint Mary into the intermission with an 8-6 lead.
 
Mount Saint Mary held a slim 15-14 lead in shots at the break and won the groundball battle 13-10 and won nine of the 13 draw controls contested.
 
Old Westbury opened the second half with a 5-1 run to surge in front 11-9 and later answered a four goal run from the Knights with three straight goals. After Ryan gave the Mount a 13-11 lead with 15:07 left in regulation, the Panthers scored three times in just under three minutes to regain a 14-13 lead.
 
Ryan knotted the score with 8:19 left with her 30th goal of the season before Cameron Isnardi pushed the Panthers back in front 15-14. Ryan answered with her 31st goal of the year just over two minutes later to get the game into extra time.
 
Both teams recorded one shot in the extra session, with Pavlik potting her sixth goal of the season with three seconds left to get the Knights into the win column.
 
Condron led the Knights with five goals in the win, with Ryan netting four. Halpin scored three times for the Knights with Chelsea Henke (Pawling, N.Y.) finding the back of the net twice. Cumming led the Knights with five groundballs in the win with Halpin pacing the team with 13 draw controls.
 
Old Westbury was led by four goals each from Isnardi and Halle Johnson, with Isnardi finishing with six points. Natasha Treuman caused six turnovers and Danielle Weir scoring a goal and winning six draw controls.
 
Amanda Picillo (Valley Stream, N.Y.) picked up the win in goal for the Knights with eight stops to go along with two groundballs, while Ashley Gugliuzzo made eight stops in the loss for Old Westbury.
 
Mount Saint Mary finished the night with a 33-30 edge in overall shots and a 24-23 advantage in shots on goal. The Knights totaled 26 groundballs in the contest, three more than the Panthers, and posted a 20-11 edge in draw controls. The Knights finished the game 14-for-18 in clearing chances.
 
Saturday's win moves Mount Saint Mary to 5-4 overall and to 2-0 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Knights is a home date with Farmingdale State on Tuesday. Opening Draw with the Rams is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
