Brooklyn, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball squad traveled to St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon and scored 9-0 and 7-0 wins against the Lady Bears.
Cindy Connoly (Walden, N.Y.) struck out 14 in the game one win, with sophomore
Bridget Bennett (Gardiner, N.Y.) fanning 10 in game two.
Game 1: Mount Saint Mary 9 – St. Joseph's-Brooklyn 0
The Knights scored in just two innings in the opener, plating the deciding run in the first and breaking the game open with eight tallies in the top of the fourth. Connoly helped her own cause in the first when she doubled home
Amanda Almodovar (Goshen, N.Y.) for the early 1-0 lead.
Leading by a run, the Knights strung together nine hits to break the game open in the fourth. Connoly drove in her second run of the game with a single and
Lauren Oury (Bethpage, N.Y.) delivered two runs with a single through the middle. Five different players drove in a run in the frame, including run scoring singles from
Emily Lang (Westtown, N.Y.) and Almodovar and an RBI double from Bennett.
Mount Saint Mary outhit St. Joseph's 14-2 in game one with five players showing multiple hits. Connoly finished 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI, with Lang,
Taylor Canto (Walden, N.Y.), Bennett and
Alyssa Hernandez (Middletown, N.Y.) all finishing with two safeties.
Connoly evened her record at 4-4 overall on the season and lowered her earned run average to 2.77 in her fifth complete game of the season. She allowed two singles and did not allow a walk, striking out 14 Lady Bears.
Game 2: Mount Saint Mary 7 – St. Joseph's-Brooklyn 0
The Knights pounded out 15 more hits in game two on Saturday, plating two runs in the second and sixth innings and three in the fourth. Almodovar and
Courtney Barbara (Fishkill, N.Y.) gave the Mount all the scoring it would need in the second, with Almodovar doubling home Oury and Barbara delivering Almodovar with a single.
In the three run fourth inning, Almodovar drove in a run on a fielder's choice with
Kathryn Eiler (Merrick, N.Y.) and Lang producing run scoring singles. Lang drove in her second run of the game in the sixth inning when she drove in
Erin McCann (East Haven, Conn.).
Almodovar and Oury each finished with three hits in the game, with Almodovar scoring three times and driving in a pair of runs. Eiler, Lang and
Nicolette Moustouka (Seaford, N.Y.) each recorded a pair of hits for the Knights.
Bennett picked up her second victory of the season and posted her second shutout. She allowed five hits and surrendered four walks, but struck out 10.
Saturday's sweep improves the Mount to 7-8 overall on the season and to a perfect 6-0 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Knights is a home set with the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Sunday. Firs pitch with the Dolphins is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
