Newark, N.J. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Tennis team stopped a four match losing skid on Thursday with an 8-1 road win at Rutgers-Newark.
Matt Anastasi (Salisbury Hills, N.Y.) won his sixth match of the season at the top singles flight.
The Knights got the match off to a good start by sweeping the three doubles matches, dropping just two games in the process. Anastasi and
Chris McGorty (Bellmore, N.Y.) cruised to an 8-0 win at the top position, with
Charles Benfer (Milton, N.Y.) and
Jaden Tiriolo (Cheshire, Conn.) at second doubles and
Shane Terry (Southampton, N.Y.) and
Joe Ryan (Wantagh, N.Y.) at the third position winning by 8-1 scores.
Anastasi picked up his sixth win of the season with an impressive 6-0, 6-2 first singles win, while McGorty collected his team leading seventh singles win with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph for the Knights at the second position.
Triolo won a 6-1, 6-2 decision at fourth singles for the Knights, with Benfer and
Armando Avila (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) posting fifth and sixth singles wins. Both players posted 6-3, 6-1 wins for the Mount.
With a 5-4 overall record, Mount Saint Mary returns to Skyline Conference play on Saturday when it plays host to St. Joseph's-L.I. Match time with the Golden Eagles is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
