Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Tennis team was handed its first conference loss of the season on Wednesday evening following a tight 5-4 home loss to the visiting United States Merchant Marine Academy. Three Knights won singles matches on the night, including
Matt Gallo (Clark, N.J.) who teamed with
Shane Terry (Southampton, N.Y.) for the team's lone doubles victory.
Senior
Matt Anastasi (Salisbury Hills, N.Y.) continued his standout career for the Knights with a 6-1, 6-4 singles win at the top flight on Wednesday. The win moves him to 8-3 at the top singles position this season and to a perfect 3-0 against Skyline Conference opponents.
Freshman
Jaden Tiriolo (Cheshire, Conn.) earned the eighth singles win of his freshman season at the fourth position for the Knights. He scored a 6-4, 6-1 win at the fourth slot to move to 9-3 on the season for the Mount. Gallo added a hard fought 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win at the sixth position to grab his first win of the year.
In doubles play, the duo of Gallo and Terry collected their third win as a unit, outlasting their opponents from USMMA 9-7.
At 6-5 overall on the season and 2-1 in Skyline Conference play, the Knights return to conference play on Thursday when they welcome Yeshiva to Newburgh. First serve with the Maccabees is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
