Mount Saint Mary Battles Against Division II Lincoln Memorial

Pedersen scoops five groundballs

Harrogate, Tenn. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team rounded out its Spring Break trip on Monday afternoon with a hard fought 14-6 loss at Division II Lincoln Memorial. Christina Ryan (Franklin Square, N.Y.) scored twice and junior Maggie Pedersen (Glasco, N.Y.) led the Mount with five groundballs.
 
The Railsplitters jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the opening four minutes of action on Monday, before Chelsea Henke (Pawling, N.Y.) got the Mount on the board at the 22:35 mark of the first half with her seventh goal of the season.
 
Lincoln Memorial responded with a 6-1 run to open a 9-2 lead with just under 13 minutes left before halftime, before the Knights scored four of the final five goals of the half to pull to within 10-6 at the intermission. Ryan scored both of her goals over the run, with Liz Halpin (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) scoring a man-up goal and Hope Blanc (Wantagh, N.Y.) adding her third marker of the year.
 
The Railsplitters held a slim 18-16 advantage in shots at the break, while the Knights took the edge in first half groundballs 12-9. Lincoln Memorial dominated draw controls over the opening 20 minutes, winning 13 of the 17 contested.
 
Blanc's goal with just over four minutes left in the first half would be the Mount's last tally of the game, as Lincoln Memorial outshot the Knights 11-7 in the second half and scored all four goals of the period. Amara Moss struck early in the frame and the home standing Railsplitters scored three more times of the final 14:05 to pull away for the eight goal win.
 
Ryan finished the game with four points, adding two assists to her scoring output to go along with a groundball. Blanc finished the game with a goal and an assist, adding three groundballs, two caused turnovers and a pair of draw controls.
 
Pedersen led the way for the Mount with five groundballs and caused one turnover, while Henke added two groundballs, two caused turnovers and two draw controls to her goal. Morgan Cordes (Sound Beach, N.Y.) contributed four groundballs and two caused turnovers for the Knights.
 
The Railsplitters were led by three goals and four assists from Kennedy Buechner and showed six players with at least two points in the game. Casey Kelly closed a strong afternoon with seven draw controls and five points.
 
Junior Amanda Picillo (Valley Stream, N.Y.) suffered the loss in goal with six saves and a groundball over the opening 30 minutes, with freshman Jackie Finkel (Warwick, N.Y.) coming on to make five saves and collect three groundballs in the second half. Micayla Starnes earned the win in goal for Lincoln Memorial with seven stops.
 
Overall, Lincoln Memorial held the advantage in shots 29-23 and in shots on goal 25-13. The Railsplitters controlled draw controls 15-7, while the Mount finished with a 28-23 advantage in groundballs.
 
At 3-4 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary opens Skyline Conference play on April 4 when it plays host to Maritime. Opening Draw with the Privateers is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
