Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College evened its overall record on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of Sarah Lawrence, winning 4-1 and 5-4.
Cindy Connoly (Walden, N.Y.) struck out eight in her first win of the season in the opener and
Kathryn Eiler (Merrick, N.Y.) capped a three-run seventh inning with a run scoring double in game two.
Game 1: Mount Saint Mary 4 – Sarah Lawrence 1
Locked in a scoreless tie in the sixth inning, the Mount broke through with the first run of game when Connoly drove in
Amanda Almodovar (Goshen, N.Y.) with a run scoring groundout. Almodovar started the inning getting hit with a pitch and stole second to set up the inning.
After the Gryphons knotted the score at 1-1 in the home half of the sixth on a Kamaron McNair RBI base hit, the Mount answered with three runs in the top of the seventh to pull away for the victory.
Morgan O'Neill (Little Falls, N.J.) drove in the eventual game winning run with a single, with
Alyssa Hernandez (Middletown, N.Y.) collecting her first career hit and RBI in the inning.
Nicolette Moustouka (Seaford, N.Y.) capped the inning with an RBI single for the Knights.
With a three run lead and one at-bat left, Connoly retired the Gryphons in order, striking out two to move to 1-1 on the season. She fanned eight in the game without a walk, allowing a single earned run on five base hits. Mikayla Cunningham suffered the loss, falling to 2-2, without allowing an earned run in 6.0 innings of work.
O'Neill finished game one 2-for-3 with an RBI. O;Neill and Taylor Cano (Walden, N.Y.) both doubled in the game, with Almodovar ripping a triple and scoring a run. Connoly, Hernandez and O'Neill each finished the game with a hit and an RBI for the Mount.
Game 2: Mount Saint Mary 5 – Sarah Lawrence 4
The Knights found themselves down 4-1 in the sixth inning in game two, but rallied with four runs over its final two at-bats to steal the win.
Emily Lang (Westtown, N.Y.) got the Mount to within 4-2, delivering Canto, who tripled, in the sixth inning.
The Knights got to within 4-3 in the seventh when O'Neill reached on an error with two outs, with Canto knotting the game with a triple to straight away center. Eiler followed with a double up the left center field gap to close out the scoring in the game.
Connoly came on to work the final 3.2 innings in relief to pick up her second win of the day. She allowed one run on three hits and struck out four. She relieved
Bridget Bennett (Gardiner, N.Y.) who went the first 3.1 innings and allowed one earned run on five hits.
Canto finished game two 2-for-4 with two triples, two runs and an RBI, with Eiler going 2-for3 with the game winning RBI.
Courtney Barbara (Fishkill, N.Y.) doubled for the Knights, with Almodovar recording a hit, run scored and stolen base.
At 2-2 overall on the season and 2-0 in Skyline Conference play, the Knights return to action on Sunday when they play host to Yeshiva. First pitch with the Maccabees at The Rock in Chester, N.Y. is set for 10:00 a.m.
