Knights Return To Conference Action At Maritime

Women coming off non-conference win over Hunter

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Swimming teams travels to Throggs Neck to take on Maritime for a Skyline Conference meet on Friday at 6 p.m.

MSMC Men At A Glance: Last time out, the men's team wrapped up competition at the Diamond City Invitational in eighth place with a point total of an even 200.

Junior Robert Kohlus (Wading River, N.Y.) produced the Mount's best individual finish and set a new school record in the 1,650-yard freestyle, swimming to a fifth place finish in the longest event of the competition to close out the day. He posted a time of 17:44.66 for the Knights, topping the previous school record of 17:57.93 set by Mount Saint Mary College Hall of Famer Tom DiLeo in 2007.

Freshman Joseph Tagliareni (Hackettstown, N.J.) picked up a 12th place finish for the Knights in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:13.22, while junior Michael Neugebauer (Newburgh, N.Y.) scored 16th place points in the 100-yard freestyle in 53.52 seconds.

Sam Kenney (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) had a strong day for the Knights, placing 15th in the 200-yard breaststroke and the 1,650-yard freestyle. His breaststroke time came in 2:44.29, while he posted a time of 22:03.82 in the freestyle race. Matthew Gallo (Clark, N.J.) turned in a 14th place finish for the Knights in the 1,650-yard freestyle, swimming a time of 20:33.27.

In the lone relay race of the day, the Mount scored a seventh place finish in the 400-yard freestyle event. The team of Kohlus, Tagliareni, P.J. Ramsey (Plantsville, Conn.) and Neugebauer posting a time of 3:27.09 for the Knights.

MSMC Women At A Glance: The women's team remained unbeaten in dual meet competition on Saturday afternoon with a spirited 103-98 non-conference win over visiting Hunter. The Knights scored eight victories in the meet.

Jillian Bunch (Newburgh, N.Y.) finished with wins for the Mount in both the 50 and 100-yard freestyle races, while McNamee controlled the 500 and 1,000-yard freestyle events. Bunch's victories on Saturday came in times of 27.18 seconds and 59.04 seconds. Bunch was the lone swimmer in the 100-yard event to finish in under 60 seconds.

Kyra McNamee (Yonkers, N.Y.) continued her stellar senior campaign on Saturday with first place points in the two longest events of the meet. She took first place in the first individual event of the day, winning the 1,000-yard freestyle by nearly 13 seconds with a time of 11:34.54 before rounding out a strong individual day with a time of 5:38.94 in the 500-yard race, winning by better than six seconds.

Daley O'Keefe (Glastonbury, Conn.), Shayla McCarroll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Katie Barber (Shelton, Conn.) each scored individual victories. O'Keefe won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:12.83 with McCarroll scoring the victory in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:29.01 and Barber taking the top spot in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:26.91. Barber added a second place swim in the 200-yard freestyle, while McCarroll picked up fourth place points in the 200-yard backstroke.

With the team score tied heading into the last event, the Knights earned the meet win with a victory in the 400-yard medley relay. The team of Bunch, McCarroll, O'Keefe and McNamee pulled away from the runner-up with a time of 3:59.75, winning the race by just over three seconds.
 
What's Next: Both Mount Saint Mary College Swimming Teams are off until January 12 when they travel to Kings Point to take on the United States Merchant Marine Academy in a conference meet. The meet is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
