Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team suffered its third straight loss overall and its second straight defeat to a league rival on Saturday following an 8-1 home loss to Purchase. Junior
Michelle Carnovale (Massapequa, N.Y.) scored the Mount's only win of the day at first singles.
Carnovale remained unblemished in singles play on Saturday, following a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Bianca Harris at the top flight. The win moves Carnovale to 7-0 on the season at first singles, including a 3-0 mark against Skyline Conference opponents.
The Knights also received strong singles showings on Saturday from
Sarah Canzone (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and
Jessalyn Goetz (Bethel, N.Y.). Canzone suffered a tough 6-4, 6-4 loss at the fifth position, while Goetz was outlasted at the sixth spot in a tight 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-10 decision.
In doubles action, the duo of Canzone and
Julia Lorenzo (Emerald Isle, N.C.) was dealt a tight 8-6 loss at the third position by the Panthers.
Saturday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary back to the .500 mark overall at 4-4 and to 1-2 in Skyline Conference action. Next up for the Knights is a trip to Yeshiva on Sunday. Match time with the Maccabees at the USTA in Flushing is set for 12:00 p.m.
