Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team closed out the 2018 regular season on Sunday with an important 8-1 victory over visiting St. Joseph's-Brooklyn. With the win the Mount clinches the fourth seed in the upcoming Skyline Conference Championship.
The Knights dominated the match, jumping out to a 3-0 lead following the doubles matches. The second pair of
Sarah Canzone (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and
Antionetta Capone (Howard Beach, N.Y.) cruised to an 8-0 win, with the top duo of
Michelle Carnovale (Massapequa, N.Y.) and
Victoria Clay (Saint James, N.Y.) battling to an 8-5 triumph. The third pairing of
Jessalyn Goetz (Bethel, N.Y.) and
Emily Quinn (Montgomery, N.Y.) also had a strong day with an 8-4 win.
The Mount went on to win five of the six singles matches on Sunday to ease to the victory. Carnovale improved to 9-1 on the season at first singles, including 5-1 against league rivals with a 6-4, 6-3 win. Clay took the second singles match by scores of 6-1, 6-1, picking up her fourth victory of the season.
Miyanna Vernon (Liberty, N.Y.) blanked her opponent at the fourth position, 6-0, 6-0, on her way to her fourth win of the season. Canzone continued her strong rookie season with a 6-1, 6-0 win at the fifth position and joined a trio of Knights tied for the team lead in wins with nine.
Katie Murray (Highland Mills, N.Y.) also picked up ninth win of the year with a 6-0, 6-2 win at the sixth slot.
Sunday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 6-7 overall on the season and to 2-4 in league play. The Knights will open play in the Skyline Conference Championship on Wednesday.
