Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team stopped its four match losing streak and evened its overall record on Wednesday with a 6-3 non-conference home win over visiting Sage. The Knights took third through sixth singles and two of the three doubles matches to score the win.
The Knights opened a 2-1 lead following the doubles matches after taking the second position 8-3 and the third slot by forfeit. The second pair of
Jessalyn Goetz (Bethel, N.Y.) and
Emily Quinn (Montgomery, N.Y.) rolled to the victory for the Mount, while the third pair of
Julia Lorenzo (Emerald Isle, N.C.) and
Sarah Canzone (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) earned the point via forfeit.
Sage took the top two singles positions on Wednesday with Abby Clobridge taking a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the top flight and Rebecca Jackson scoring a 6-1, 6-0 decision at second singles. The Knights went on to win the third through sixth positions with Canzone taking the third singles match by scores of 6-2, 6-1.
Katie Murray (Highland Mills, N.Y.) continued her strong rookie campaign on Wednesday by blanking her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at the fourth position. Goetz finished off a strong night for the Mount with a 6-4, 6-3 win at the fifth position. Quinn picked up the sixth singles point for the Knights with a win by forfeit.
Wednesday's win evens the Mount overall record at 5-5. The Knights continue a busy week on Friday when they travel Brooklyn for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference match with the Bulldogs.
