Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Tennis team begins play in the 2017 Skyline Conference Championship on Tuesday evening with a First Round match against fifth seeded Farmingdale State. Match time on campus at Mount Saint Mary is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
At A Glance: The Knights enter the conference championship as the fourth seed after posting an 8-6 overall record and a 5-3 mark against league opponents. Mount Saint Mary won eight of its final nine regular season matches, including a 6-3 victory over the Rams on April 29.
Senior
Matt Anastasi (Salisbury Hills, N.Y.) has put together a stellar campaign for the Mount, holding a 13-1 record at first singles. He has won each of his last 10 singles decisions this season, including a 6-4, 6-4 victory at the top flight against Farmingdale State in the regular season finale.
Anastasi is one of three players to hold a winning streak of at least six matches currently, joining
Chris McGorty (Bellmore, N.Y.) and senior
Owen Heath (Jamestown, R.I.). McGorty has been victorious in each of his last seven outings and stands at 9-4 on the year at the second position, while Heath is unbeaten in six contests this year, including a 5-0 mark at the fourth slot.
Sophomore
Shane Terry (Southampton, N.Y.) stands at 7-6 overall on the season in singles play and has gone 7-3 in his last 10 decisions. He is 6-6 for the Knights at the third position, including a 6-2 mark against Skyline Conference opponents.
In doubles play, the duo of Anastasi and McGorty have ripped off six straight wins and are 7-3 in their last 10 matches at the first position. The duo is 7-5 overall on the year, including 6-2 against league rivals, and leads the team in doubles wins.
Previewing The Rams: Farmingdale State comes back to Newburgh with an 8-9 overall record, including a 4-4 mark in league play. The Rams dropped three of their final five matches of the regular season, with the wins coming over St. Joseph's-L.I. and St. Joseph's-Brooklyn.
Zachary Baker has posted nine wins at first singles to lead Farmingdale State, who has also received nine triumphs over three positions from James Roth. Patrick Madigan and Bradley Maslak have each won six times in singles play for the Rams coming into Tuesday match.
In doubles play, the duo of Baker and Maslak paces Farmingdale State with four victories among 21 different duos on the season.
2017 Meeting: The Knights posted a 6-3 win to close the regular season, taking four of the six singles matches and two of the three doubles tilts. Anastasi moved his winning streak to 10 with Heath and McGorty also extending win streaks to six and seven, respectively.
Championship History: The Knights have qualified for the conference championship each of the last six seasons and hold a 3-6 mark in the event since 2011. The Mount made a trip to the championship final in 2014 and against Farmingdale State is winless in the championship in four outings since 2011.
What's At Stake: The winner of Tuesday's match earns a trip to top seeded Yeshiva on Thursday for a semifinal match with the Maccabees.
