Knights Edged By #11 Christopher Newport

Moustouka records two hits, fans six

Union, N.J. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team opened the Union, N.J. Regional on Friday afternoon with a hard fought 2-0 loss to #11 Christopher Newport. Sophomore Nicolette Moustouka (Seaford, N.Y.) picked up two of the team's three hits in the game.

Mount Saint Mary starter Cindy Connoly (Walden, N.Y.) and Christopher Newport's Aubrey Bates hooked up in a pitcher's duel that saw the aces match zeros until the sixth inning. Connoly retired the side in order three times, including the first two innings, while Baker set the Knights down in order four times on the day.

The Captains finally broke through with the deciding runs in the sixth inning, posting two hits and taking advantage of a leadoff walk. After Leah Andrews walked to lead off the frame and stole second, she was pushed home with the eventual game winning run on a single from Grace Wild. After Wild advanced to second on the throw home, she was chased home on a two-out double from Liz Andrews to close out the scoring in the inning and the game.

Mount Saint Mary put the leadoff runner on in the seventh when Connoly singled down the left field line, but couldn't move the runner into scoring position. The game ended on a deep fly ball to center field off the bat of Breanna DePasquale (Brooklyn, N.Y.).

Moustouka finished 2-for-2 in the game, reaching on an infield single and shooting a ball to right center field for a single. Connoly accounted for the team's only other hit with her leadoff single in the team's final at-bat.

Liz Andrews finished with two of Christopher Newport's five hits, including the only extra base hit of the day. Leah Andrews and Wild scored the runs, with Wild adding a hit and an RBI.

Connoly suffered her first loss since April 20 and falls to 13-8 overall on the season. She worked her team leading 21st complete game of the season, allowing two runs on five hits. She fanned six Captains in the game and walked just the one batter. Bates moved to 12-2 with the win, striking out four and allowing three singles.

Friday's loss stops a 10 game winning streak for the Knights and drops it to 27-13 overall on the season. The Mount will take on the loser of the upcoming #13 Kean and Neumann contest in the Regional's first elimination game on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
