Knights Top Farmingdale State To Close Regular Season

Anastasi, Heath, McGorty extend long winning streaks

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Tennis Team, who will begin play in the Skyline Conference Championship as the fourth seed, closed the regular season on Saturday with a 6-3 home win over Farmingdale State. Matt Anastasi (Salisbury Hills, N.Y.), Owen Heath (Jamestown, R.I.) and Chris McGorty (Bellmore, N.Y.) all extended winning streaks of at least five matches.
 
Anastasi continued his impressive senior campaign at the top singles position with a hard fought 6-4, 6-4 win for the Knights. The victory moved him to 13-1 on the season as the top spot and gives him 10 straight singles victories.
 
McGorty stayed strong at the second singles position on Saturday, cruising to a 6-0, 6-2 win for the Knights. He moved to 9-4 overall on the season and 6-2 against league rivals as he won his seventh straight singles decision.
 
Heath, who is unbeaten in singles play on the season, blanked his opponent at the fourth position 6-0, 6-0 on Saturday. He stands at 6-0 on the season for the Knights, including wins in each of his four Skyline Conference contests.
 
Sophomore Shane Terry (Southampton, N.Y.) picked up the Knights' other singles win on the day with a tough 7-6 (11-9), 6-4 win at the third position. The win moved him to 6-2 in singles action against league rivals and to 7-3 in his last 10 outings.
 
In doubles play, the Knights scored wins at the first two positions on Saturday. Anastasi and McGorty won their sixth straight match at the first position with an 8-3 win, while Terry and Heath outlasted their opponents at the second spot, 9-7.
 
Saturday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 8-6 overall on the season and to 5-3 against league rivals. The Knights will open Skyline Conference Championship play on Tuesday in Newburgh at a time to be announced.
