Old Westbury, N.Y. – Senior
Michelle Surdan (Acton, Mass.) was one of four players to drive in at least three runs and tied the program's career record in the category with 85 as the Mount Saint Mary College Softball team scored 12 runs in the seventh inning on its way to an 18-1 Skyline Conference triumph at Old Westbury. Saturday's game two was postponed due to weather and poor field conditions.
The Knights got on the board early as Surdan doubled home
Shannon Sommer (Brewster, N.Y.) in the first frame to open the scoring. The Knights increased their lead by three runs in the third inning keyed by a run scoring single from
Cindy Connoly (Walden, N.Y.) and a two-run doubled off the bat of
Kathryn Eiler (Merrick, N.Y.).
The Mount moved in front 6-0 in the top of the fourth and after the Panthers scored their only run in the home half of the frame, the Knights erupted for 12 runs in their final at-bat to pull away for the victory.
The Mount sent 17 batters to the plate in the seventh inning and recorded eight hits.
Breanna DePasquale (Brooklyn, N.Y.) connected on a two-run home run in the frame, with Connoly and
Taylor Canto (Walden, N.Y.) recording run scoring doubles.
Mount Saint Mary featured six players with at least two hits, with Sommer, Surdan and Connoly all finishing with three safeties. Sommer scored five runs with Connoly, DePasquale and Eiler each driving in three. Surdan drove home four runs and sits with 85 career RBI, finishing the game with a pair of doubles and two runs scored.
Connoly picked up the win in the circle and moved to 8-7 on the year. She allowed a single earned run on five hits. She struck out eight and did not walk a batter as she has struck out 127 batters this season against just 11 walks.
Saturday's win moves Mount Saint Mary to 19-12 overall on the season and to 12-1 against league rivals. Next up for the Knights is a Skyline Conference set at St. Joseph's-L.I. on Sunday. First pitch with the Golden Eagles is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
