Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team travels to second seeded St. Joseph's-L.I. on Wednesday evening for the semifinal round of the Skyline Conference Championship. First serve with the Golden Eagles is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
At A Glance: The Knights will make their first appearance in the Skyline Conference Championship since 2013 and enter the event with a 7-8 overall record and a 3-3 mark against league opponents during the regular season.
Sophomore
Michelle Carnovale (Massapequa, N.Y.) leads the Mount in singles wins with 11 and posted a 5-1 mark against league rivals in 2017. Freshman
Victoria Clay (Saint James, N.Y.), a two-time conference Rookie of the Week honoree, posted a 9-4 record in singles play in her first season with the Knights, while
Dorothy Tighe (Walden, N.Y.) and
Miyanna Vernon (Liberty, N.Y.) each won eight matches during the regular season.
Carnovale and Clay teamed up at the first doubles position for nine wins to lead the team, while
Charlotte Pascual (Freeport, N.Y.) and Tighe worked together for seven triumphs in 13 decisions. The Knights used three combinations at third doubles throughout the regular season, with
Antonietta Capone (Howard Beach, N.Y.) and
Julia Lorenzo (Emerald Isle, N.C.) leading the way with four victories.
Recent Skyline Championship History: The Mount's last appearance in the event came in a 5-0 loss to Farmingdale State in 2013 that ended a string of four straight championships for the Knights. Mount Saint Mary claimed the conference championship from 2009-12, the only four crowns in program history.
Regular Season Result: The Knights hosted St. Joseph's on September 30, dropping a hard fought 6-3 decision. Carnovale, Clay and
Emily Quinn (Montgomery, N.Y.) won singles decisions for the Knights, while the Golden Eagles took second, third and fifth singles and all three doubles matches to earn the victory.
Scouting St. Joseph's: The Golden Eagles are on a seven match winning streak and have not dropped a match since falling to Oneonta by a 9-0 score on September 23 and enter Wednesday's semifinal at 10-2 overall.
St. Joseph's features five players with at least seven singles wins on the year, led by a 9-3 mark from Nora Burnett. Caroline Mandaro and Victoria Panicola have each won eight matches thus far, with Alana Caporale and Lindsey Charrier showing seven wins apiece.
In doubles play, the duo of Caporale and Charrier has produced seven wins heading into the semifinal round with Panicola and Amanda Post sporting a 6-4 mark at the top position for the Golden Eagles.
Championship Schedule: In addition to the Knights and Golden Eagles, Purchase and top-seeded Yeshiva will square-off on Wednesday with the winners competing for the conference championship over the weekend.
