Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Tennis team continued the fall season and picked up its second win of the year on Thursday with an impressive 9-0 win over visiting Sage.
Jaden Tiriolo (Cheshire, Conn.) moved his singles record on the season to a perfect 3-0 in the victory.
Senior
Matt Anastasi (Salisbury Hills, N.Y.) and Tiriolo both picked up 6-0, 6-0 victories for the Knights over the Gators. Anastasi moved his singles record to 2-1 at the first position, while Tiriolo remained unblemished on the season overall and improved to 2-0 at the fourth slot.
Chris McGorty (Bellmore, N.Y.) and
Shane Terry (Southampton, N.Y.) both lost only one game in their wins, with McGorty scoring a 6-0, 6-1 second singles win and Terry prevailing at the third position by a 6-1, 6-0 decision.
At fifth singles, freshman
Charles Benfer (Milton, N.Y.) eased to a 6-1, 6-1 victory for his second win of the season, while sophomore
Davonte Woodton (Fort Montgomery, N.Y.) battled to a 7-5, 6-3 win at sixth singles for the Knights in season debut.
The Knights got the match off to a good start with three doubles wins, with Anastasi and McGorty blanking their opponents at the top flight and
Matt Gallo (Clark, N.J.) and
Joe Ryan (Wantagh, N.Y.) earning an 8-2 third doubles victory. The middle pair of Terry and Benfer outlasted their opponents from Sage by an 8-7 (7-4) score.
Thursday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 2-1 overall on the season. The Knights close out the fall portion of the schedule on Sunday when they play host to Pratt. Match time with the Cannoneers is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
