Knights overcome five goal deficit to force extra time

Newburgh, N.Y. – Sophomore Christina Ryan (Franklin Square, N.Y.) capped a five goal run with 14 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, but the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team was foiled in the extra session, falling 13-12 to Farmingdale State on Friends of Jaclyn Day. Ryan was one of three Knights with at least two goals in the game on Saturday afternoon.

Mount Saint Mary found itself trailing by five goals, following a sluggish start. Farmingdale State scored the first three goals of the game, inside the first three minutes of play, and closed the opening frame with four of the final five goals to take a 9-4 lead into the intermission.

The visitors finished the opening 30 minutes with a 12-10 advantage in shots and 9-7 edge in groundballs, while dominating draw controls, winning 10 of the 14 contested.

The Rams came out of the break and scored two of the first three goals to maintain a five goal led, before the Knights held Farmingdale State off the board for the final 14 minutes of regulation. Gattoni and Claire Duffy (Monroe, N.Y.) scored twice in the final 13 minutes of regulation and Duffy fed Ryan on the game tying goal in the closing seconds.

Mount Saint Mary won the only draw control in the extra period and Duffy got a shot on goal that was stopped before the Rams were able to cash in. Brittany Rosino potted a free-position goal with 35 seconds left for the win.

Katie Gattoni (Old Tappan, N.J.) led the Knights with five goals in the game with Duffy and Ryan each scoring a pair of goals. Duffy picked up two assists in the game, adding five draw controls. Amanda Clemens (Baldwin, N.Y.), Shannon Root (Wildwood, Mo.) and Morgan Cordes (Sound Beach, N.Y.) each collected three groundballs, with Root and Kayla Goman (Greenwich, N.Y.) causing a pair of turnovers.

Rosino led the way with seven goals for Farmingdale State and added three groundballs and eight draw controls. Alexandra Sparrow won four draw controls and Jay Sanchez picked up three assists for the Rams.

Mount Saint Mary goalie, Amanda Picillo (Valley Stream, N.Y.), finished the contest with four saves, while Krista Spagnoletta stopped 10 shots in the victory for the Rams.
