Mount Saint Mary Has Winning Streak Stopped At Sage

Connoly fans 10 in game one, Dexter records three hits in game two

Troy, N.Y. – After winning seven straight conference series to open the season and 10 straight games overall, the Mount Saint Mary College Softball team was topped twice on the road at Sage on Sunday, falling by scores of 5-2 and 6-5. Senior Chelsea Dexter (Beacon, N.Y.) recorded three hits and drove in two runs in game two for the Knights.

Mount Saint Mary struck first in game one, plating both of its runs in the top of the fourth to take a two run lead. Courtney Barbara (Fishkill, N.Y.) got the Knights on the board when she drove in Dexter with a single and Nicolette Moustouka (Seaford, N.Y.) extended the Mount's lead to 2-0 with a single up the middle that delivered Taylor Canto (Walden, N.Y.).

Sage would get a run back in the bottom of the fourth on a Morgan Dunn home run and moved in front with four tallies in the home half of the sixth. The Gators homered twice in the inning, with Katy Rimawi hitting a solo blast and Katie Kovage connecting on a three-run shot.

Mount Saint Mary outhit Sage in the game 9-7, with the Mount leaving the bases loaded in the fourth and two runners on in the fifth, sixth and seventh. Dexter and Canto each finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Sage got a pair of hits from Rimawi, Alexa Silk and Kovage, with Dunn scoring two runs and Kovage driving in three.

Sophomore Cindy Connoly (Walden, N.Y.) suffered just her second loss of the season and fell to 7-2 on the year after working 6.0 innings. She struck out 10, matching her season high, and walked one. Kovage picked up the win for Sage, allowing one earned run in 6.0 innings and striking out five.

In game two, the Knights jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a run in the first and four more in the second, but saw Sage counter with a run in the second, two more in the third and three runs in the fourth. Shannon Sommer (Brewster, N.Y.) gave the Knights the early lead when she scored on a wild pitch, with Michelle Surdan (Acton, Mass.) doubling in two runs and Dexter delivering two more with a single in the big second frame.

Allison Ford got the Gators on the board with a run scoring double in the second, with Jessica Adams bringing Sage a run closer with an RBI double in the third. Kiersten Duncan delivered the third Gators' run with a single in the third before Silk connected on a three-run homer in the fourth to push the Gators in front for good in the game.

Sage recorded four more extra base hits in game two with Silk and Adams each going 2-for-3. Silk scored twice and drove in three with the home run and added a stolen base.

Dexter finished game two 3-for-4 with two RBI with Surdan going 2-for-4 with a run and a pair of RBI. Dexter, Surdan and Kathryn Eiler (Merrick, N.Y.) all doubled for the Knights and Sommer finished the game with two runs scored.
