Gattoni’s Late Goal Sends Mount Saint Mary To First Ever Win Over New Paltz

Junior nets five goals, Duffy collects nine groundballs

Newburgh, N.Y. – Junior Katie Gattoni (Old Tappan, N.J.) scored five times, including the game winner with 33 seconds left in regulation time, and Shannon McGuinness (Oceanside, N.Y.) added four goals as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team scored its first ever win over New Paltz with a 12-11 come-from-behind win over the Hawks on Wednesday night.
 
Mount Saint Mary tied the score five times in the second half, but never moved in front of New Paltz until Gattoni's game winner late in the second half. Her team leading 12th goal of the season was her fourth of the second half for the Knights.
 
After scoring just two goals in the first half, Mount Saint Mary exploded for 10 scores after halftime, pulling even coming out of the break on a McGuinness tally 1:22 into the second stanza. After the two teams traded goals 14 seconds apart, New Paltz tallied the next three goals to take a 7-4 advantage just under 10 minutes into the second half.
 
The Knights would pull to within 7-5, but New Paltz potted back-to-back goals 14 seconds apart to spread its advantage back to 9-5 with 18:07 remaining in regulation time.
 
Down by a game-high four goals, Mount Saint Mary closed the game with seven of the final nine markers to come away with the victory. Jennifer Bones (Camden, Del.) evened the score at 9-9 with her second goal of the season with 10:28 left to play with McGuinness bringing the Knights even at 10-10 and 11-11 inside the final five minutes. Her seventh goal of the season came with 90 seconds left with the Knights on a man advantage.
 
The Gattoni goal gave the Mount its only advantage of the game, snapping a six game losing streak to its local rival dating back to 2010.
 
In a tightly contested first half, Mount Saint Mary went nearly 13 minutes without a tally, until Kathleen McGinnis (Shelton, Conn.) got the Knights on the board after New Paltz ran out to an early 3-0 lead.
 
Gattoni closed out the game with five goals and three groundballs, while McGuinness finished off the night with four markers two groundballs and a draw control. Senior Claire Duffy (Monroe, N.Y.) assisted on three goals, including McGuinness' tying marker with 1:30 left, adding a game-high nine groundballs, two caused turnovers and two draw controls.
 
McGinnis paced the Knights with four draw controls, chipping in with a goal and an assist, with Kayla Goman (Greenwich, N.Y.) posting three draw controls and three groundballs.
 
New Paltz was led by three goals each from Rachael Purtell and Kelsey Aeberli. Nicole Gottschalk won three draw controls and added three groundballs and a pair of goals.
 
Both goalies played solid games for their respective squads, with freshman Amanda Picillo (Valley Stream, N.Y.) collecting her second career win for the Knights. She made six saves in the contest to go along with two caused turnovers and a pair of groundballs. Colleen Roemer stopped 13 shots in the loss for the Hawks.
 
Tightly contested throughout, Mount Saint Mary finished the game with a 32-21 edge in shots and a 25-17 edge in shots on goal. The Knights won the groundball battle 25-20 and finished with a 14-11 edge in draw controls. The Knights rounded out the night 11-for-15 in clearing chances.
 
Wednesday's win moves Mount Saint Mary to 2-1 overall on the season. The Knights will return to action on March 17 when they travel to Western Connecticut. Opening Draw in Danbury, Conn. is set for 7:00 p.m.
 
Games Notes: Mount Saint Mary was 0-6 against New Paltz all-time heading into Wednesday's contest…The Knights lost the 2015 matchup with the Hawks 23-13.
