Knights Downed By Western Connecticut In Season Opener

Goldbach fans four in season debut

Danbury, Conn. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team opened the 2016 season on Tuesday afternoon with a 6-0 loss to Western Connecticut. Three different Knights picked up a base hit in the game and Victoria Goldbach (Middle Village, N.Y.) struck out four batters in a complete game effort.

Western Connecticut broke a scoreless tie and got all the offense it would need with five runs in the fourth inning. Erin Weber drove in the eventual game winning run with a single to left field in the big fourth inning and later drove in her second run of the game with a single in the top of the fifth.

The Knights got more than one runner on base in just two innings on Tuesday, but could not get a runner to third in the game. Shannon Sommer (Brewster, N.Y.), Michelle Surdan (Acton, Mass.) and Taylor Canto (Walden, N.Y.) all singled for the Knights on the day. Surdan reached twice in the game after getting hit with a pitch.

The Colonials had four players record a pair of hits in the game with Candace Lawrence scoring two runs and Weber driving in two. Lawrence added a stolen base in the game for Western Connecticut.

Goldbach suffered the loss in the circle, working a complete game. She struck out four batters and did not surrender a walk in the game. Emily Cintorino picked up the win with 6.0 shutout innings of work. She struck out seven in the game as she moved to 1-3.
