NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College men's tennis team (5-3, 3-1 Skyline) hit its first speed bump on the road to the Skyline Conference Championship Tournament, falling to Purchase College (5-2, 3-1 Skyline), 9-0, in Skyline Conference action Sunday afternoon on the Mount Saint Mary College Tennis Courts.
The Knights fell into an early hole after being swept in doubles play. Junior
Dan Witke (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and freshman
Connor Gargan (Rocky Point, N.Y.) were defeated at No. 2 doubles by Purchase's Cedric Bluman and Joseph Troop, 8-2, to start the day. Senior
Connor Bean (Glenville, N.Y.) and junior
Joe Borden (Newburgh, N.Y.) then fell by the score of 8-4 at first doubles to Riley Damerell and Dylan DeBiase. Chisei and Taimu Tomita closed out doubles for Purchase by defeating senior
Bryan Frank (West Babylon, N.Y.) and freshman
Chris Jaros (Marlboro, N.Y.), 8-3.
Bean fell to Damerell, 6-0, 2-1, after retiring in the second set of the No. 1 singles match. Jaros then fell to Chisei Tomita, 6-0, 6-1, at sixth singles. Gargan suffered a 6-1, 6-0 loss at No. 4 singles to Bluman. Frank lost his No. 5 singles match to Taimu Tomita, 6-2, 6-2. Borden was unable to defeat Troop at third singles, falling 6-4, 6-2. Witke played a tough match against DeBiase at flight-two singles, but fell in a tiebreaker, 6-3, 4-6, 10-5.
The Knights will next play on Tuesday, April 14, against the defending conference champion Yeshiva University. The match is set to begin at the Binghamton Racquet Club in Edgewater, N.J. at 8 p.m.
