NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College men's tennis team (3-2, 1-0 Skyline) picked up a 9-0 shut-out victory over Skyline Conference newcomer Sarah Lawrence College (0-4, 0-3 Skyline) Sunday afternoon on the Mount Saint Mary College Tennis Courts.
"We came out very strong and played very well," said
Eric Sturgis after his first Skyline match as the Knights' head coach. "It is nice to get a 9-0 win in the conference."
Freshman
Chris Jaros (Marlboro, N.Y.) and senior
Bryan Frank (West Babylon, N.Y.) opened things up with an 8-0 win over Ben Dougherty and Bowen Li at No. 3 doubles. Junior
Dan Witke (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and freshman
Connor Gargan (Rocky Point, N.Y.) followed up shortly after with an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles over Andre Garibaldi and Aidan O'Brien. Senior
Connor Bean (Glenville, N.Y.) and junior
Joe Borden (Newburgh, N.Y.) capped off doubles play with a flight-one conquest of Elliott Warkus and Adam Neufeld by the score of 8-5.
Jaros kept his momentum rolling with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles over Li. Senior
Joel Rodriguez (Hackensack, N.J.) earned his first win with a 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Dougherty at sixth singles. Bean won at No. 2 over Neufeld, taking the first set, 6-2, before his opponent retired to give Bean the win. Frank was victorious in his No. 4 singles match over O'Brien, 6-1, 6-4. Witke won his first No. 1 singles match over Warkus, 6-1, 6-3. Borden finished up the day with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Garibaldi at flight three, 6-2, 6-3.
The Knights continue Skyline play on Wednesday, April 1, when they head up to Troy, N.Y. for a match with The Sage Colleges. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m.
