GOSHEN, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College men's tennis team (1-1) opened the spring 2015 portion of its season with a victory over the City College of New York (1-2) by a score of 8-1 Sunday evening at the MatchPoint Tennis Club.
"We played very well for our first match," said head coach
Eric Sturgis. "I was proud of how we came out and brought intensity."
Juniors
Dan Witke (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and
Joe Borden (Newburgh, N.Y.) picked up a win at No. 1 doubles over CCNY's Michael Benavidez and Max Bernstein by the score of 8-2 to kick off the match. Senior
Connor Bean (Glenville, N.Y.) and freshman
Connor Gargan (Rocky Point, N.Y.) defeated Andrew Bregman and Augustinus Hadiputro, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles. Seniors
Bryan Frank (West Babylon, N.Y.) and
Shane McLoughlin (Washingtonville, N.Y.) won their third-flight doubles match, 8-1, over Andrew Chen and Matthew Barabas.
Bean took down Bregman at top-flight singles, 7-6, 6-4. Witke shut out Benavidez at second singles, 6-0, 6-0. Borden suffered a three-set defeat in a close match at No. 3 against Bernstein,7-5, 5-7, 4-10. Gargan beat Hadiputro at flight four, 6-2, 6-4. Freshman
Chris Jaros (Marlboro, N.Y.) had a very up-and-down match at No. 5 against Barabas, but came out on top, 2-6, 6-0, 10-8. Frank earned a clean sweep over Chen at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0, to close out the match.
The Knights return to action on Tuesday, March 17, when they host John Jay College of Criminal Justice in a non-conference match on the Mount Saint Mary College Tennis Courts. The match is set to begin at 4:30 p.m.
