Madison, N.J. – The Mount Saint Mary Men's Swimming team picked up its first win of the season on Friday night with a 116-59 road triumph at Drew. The Knights won nine events in the meet, including two individual wins each from
Jake Schoenherr (Scarsdale, N.Y.),
Christopher Sagan (West Hempstead, N.Y.) and
Sam Watson (Groton, Conn.).
Schoenherr dominated the sprint freestyle events on Friday, taking the top spot in both the 50-yard and 100-yard races. His winning time in the 50-yard event was 23.61 seconds, before he bested the field in the 100-yard event with a time of 52.10 seconds.
Philippe Noisy (New York, N.Y.) took second for the Knights in the 50-yard race, while
Anthony Krueger (Naugatuck, Conn.) took second in the 100-yard race.
Sagan collected victories on Friday night for Mount Saint Mary in the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 200-yard breaststroke. He bested the field in the freestyle with a time of 11:15.19, before touching out with a winning time in the breaststroke in 2:30.19.
Watson continued the strong start to his senior season at Drew with victories for the Knights in both the 200-yard individual medley and the 200-yard backstroke. Watson topped the field in the IM in 2:16.36 before winning the backstroke event in 2:15.32. Sophomore
Matthew Gamboa (Huntington, N.Y.) took third for the Mount in the IM race on Friday.
Sophomore
Kyle Barber (Shelton, Conn.) earned the seventh individual win of the night for Mount Saint Mary with a victory in the 200-yard butterfly. He collected first place points for the Knights with a time of 2:12.97. Barber also posted a second place finish for the Knights in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:31.48.
Mount Saint Mary also received a strong effort on Friday from sophomore
Ryan Verillo (Cheshire, Conn.) who took second in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:04.80 and the 200-yard butterfly in 2:20.34.
The Knights opened Friday's meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay and closed the night with a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Watson, Sagan, Barber and Ward won the opening event in 1:50.73 before Schoenherr, Ward, Verillo and
Steven Fejes (Stony Point, N.Y.) took the freestyle race in 3:44.59.
At 1-1 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary will open the home schedule on November 7 when it welcomes King's (Pa.) to the Kaplan Center Pool. Meet time is set for 1:00 p.m.
