SCRANTON, Pa. – The Mount Saint Mary College men's and women's swimming teams both fell to Marywood University Friday evening in their first dual meet of 2015. The women barely lost, dropping a 101-100 decision to fall to 5-2 on the year. The men fell by a score of 134-53 and now sit at 3-4 overall on the season.
The women got their first win of the evening in the 200-yard butterfly, where freshman
Melissa Gulia (Orange, Conn.) touched first in 2:38.56. Sophomore
Regina Zeoli (Washingtonville, N.Y.) next won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:26.98. Freshman
Marissa Catania (Rocky Hill, Conn.) came out on top in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing in 2:38.22. Junior
Lauren Becerra (White Plains, N.Y.) swam well to win the one-mile (1,650-yard) freestyle with a time of 19:27.18. The women also got a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay, as the team of sophomore
Amanda Bocekci (Paramus, N.J.), sophomore
Kira Adler (Shelton, Conn.), freshman
Rachael Stone (Wallingford, Conn.) and sophomore
Allison Sciucco (Middletown, N.Y.) finished in 1:49.18 to take the top spot.
The men's team got first-place points in the 200-yard freestyle relay, as the foursome of freshman
Jake Schoenherr (Scarsdale, N.Y.), freshman Ryan Verrillo (Cheshire, Conn.), junior Joe Kulesza (Torrington, Conn.) and freshman
Ryan Ward (Brooklyn, N.Y.) swam the event in 1:40.29. Schoenherr put in solid times in his individual events, taking third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.44) and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (52.69). Ward also fared well, taking third in the 50-yard freestyle (23.35) and second in the 100-yard freestyle (51.64). Junior
Christopher Sagan (West Hempstead, N.Y.) looked good in his three individual races, taking third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:17.65), second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:32.95) and third in the 1,650-yard (one-mile) freestyle (19:20.70).
Both Knight swim teams will look to bounce back tomorrow, Jan. 10, as they host Elms College in a non-conference dual-meet in the Kaplan Center Pool. The meet is set to kick off at 1 p.m.
