Match ResultsNEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College men's tennis team (10-3, 5-0 Skyline) clinched the Skyline Conference's regular season title for the first time in program history on Sunday by defeating St. Joseph's College (L.I.) (5-4, 2-3 Skyline), 8-1, on the Mount Saint Mary College Tennis Courts.
The Knights are now one step closer to their first-ever undefeated Skyline record and first Skyline Championship since 2008. They will take on Purchase College on Tuesday, April 15, at 5 p.m. at Purchase with a chance to go 6-0 in Skyline play.
The Knights grabbed two points in doubles play after picking up wins in first and third doubles. Senior
Greg Jacob (Ridgefield, Conn.) and junior
Nate Dimmie (Middletown, N.Y.) defeated Adam Friel and Tom O'Keefe, 8-3, in No. 1 doubles, and then sophomore
Dan Witke (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and graduate student
Kevin Ryan (West Islip, N.Y.) beat Stephen Fox and Denzil Charles at No. 3, 8-2.
The Knight swept singles play to ensure themselves the victory. Jacob played well against Brandon Abbatiello at first singles to win, 6-3, 6-3. Dimmie played a tough match with Friel at No. 2 singles, coming out on top, 4-6, 6-4, 10-3. Sophomore
Mike Balokoz (Milford, Conn.) defeated O'Keefe at flight three, 7-5, 6-4, while Witke took down Chris Corrao at flight four, 6-1, 6-2. Freshman
Gavin McNulty (Darien, Conn.) and junior
Connor Bean (Glenville, N.Y.) made quick work of their opponents at flights five and six, respectively, to cap off the win.
The Knights take on Purchase on Tuesday, and then close out their regular season schedule with a non-conference match at Bard College on Tuesday, April 22.
