WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Mount Saint Mary College men's and women's swimming teams both fell in a dual-match at King's College (Pa.) on Saturday. The women, down a few members due to illness, fell 106-96, while the men dropped a 107-89 decision. Both teams drop to 1-1 on the season.
The men picked up wins in three events on Saturday. The 400-yard medley relay team of junior
Sam Watson (Groton, Conn.), freshman
Matthew Gamboa (Huntington, N.Y.), freshman
Kyle Barber (Shelton, Conn.) and freshman
Ryan Ward (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took first with a time of 4:01.01. Barber grabbed a win in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:14.63, while freshman Ryan Verrillo (Cheshire, Conn.) finished in 2:21.82 to take second. Watson touched first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:11.17.
Despite the short roster, the women managed to pick up some victories on Saturday as well to force a close score. Freshman
Rachael Stone (Wallingford, Conn.) swam an 11:43.72 in the 1,000-yard freestyle to take first place. Junior
Lauren Becerra (White Plains, N.Y.) grabbed a win in the next event, the 200-yard freestyle, touching in 2:06.47. Becerra also came out on top in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:44.17. Sophomore
Jessica Daigle (Trumbull, Conn.) finished right behind her after swimming a 5:51.30. Freshman
Marissa Catania (Rocky Hill, Conn.) was the last individual winner for the Knights, coming out on top in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:41.65.
The women were also victorious in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Becerra, senior
Danielle Rodriguez (Highland, N.Y.), Daigle and Catania finished the event in 4:04.54.
The Knights get back to work with back-to-back Skyline dual meets on Friday, Nov. 14, and Saturday, Nov. 15. They Knights will travel down to Purchase College to take on the Panthers on Friday at 6 p.m. They will then host Skyline newcomer Sarah Lawrence College at the Kaplan Center Pool on Saturday at 1 p.m.
