NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College swimming teams both picked up their first victories of the season on Saturday, as the men (1-0) defeated the Drew University men (0-2), 156-90, and the Knight women (1-0) took down the Drew women (0-2), 153-95, in the Kaplan Center Pool.
For the men, freshman
Ryan Ward (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took first in the 200-yard freestyl,e earning a time of 1:57.14, followed by senior
Jason Lorch (Plainview, N.Y.), who touched at 2:02.89. Junior
Sam Watson (Groton, Conn.) claimed the number one spot in the 100-yard backstroke, clocking in at 1:00.22. A one-two finish for the Knights in the 50-yard freestyle helped to lock up the victory, as freshman
Jake Schoenherr (Scarsdale, N.Y.) swam and Ward swam times of 23.76 and 24.05, respectively. Schoenherr and Ward switched seats in the 100-yard freestyle, with Ward finishing first in 53.87 and Schoenherr clocking a time of 54.62. In the 500-yard freestyle, junior
Christopher Sagan (West Hempstead, N.Y.) took first, touching the wall at 5:47.94.
On the women's side, junior
Lauren Becerra (White Plains, N.Y.) took first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:05.41. Freshman
Marissa Catania (Rocky Hill, Conn.) earned first with a time of 1:12.67 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Freshman
Melissa Gulia (Orange, Conn.) took first by nearly three seconds in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:35.53. Becerra earned another victory in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 58.44, followed by freshman
Kate Bell, who came in at 59.09. Freshman
Rachael Stone (Wallingford, Conn.) took first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:43.32.
The women's 400-yard freestyle relay made up of senior
Danielle Rodriguez (Highland, N.Y.), Bell, Stone and Becerra took first at 3:57.45, defeating Drew's relay team by four seconds. Freshman
Kyle Barber (Shelton, Conn.), Schoenherr, Lorch and Ward made up the men's 400-yard freestyle relay that also triumphed with a time of 3:38.07.
The Knights will next swim on Saturday, Nov. 8, at Kings College (Pa.) in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. The meet is set to begin at 1 p.m.
