PATCHOGUE, N.Y. - Mount Saint Mary College won its seventh straight match on Saturday afternoon, defeating St. Joseph's College, 8-1, in Skyline Conference action. The Knights improve to 10-3 overall (3-0 Skyline), while the Golden Eagles fell back to 3-4 overall (0-2 Skyline).
The Mount set the tone early by taking all three doubles points. Junior
Stat Willand (Sparta, N.J.) and freshman
Mike Balokoz (Milford, Conn.) pieced together a strong effort in an 8-1 win at second doubles, while junior
Greg Jacob (Ridgefield, Conn.) and sophomore
Nate Dimmie (Middletown, N.Y.) came away with an 8-4 win at first doubles. Sophomore
Conor Merryman (Marlboro, N.Y.) and senior
Bryan Pujol (East Rockaway, N.Y.) rounded out the sweep when they closed out an 8-3 decision in the third position.
The Knights claimed five of the six singles matches, highlighted by a super tiebreaker win from freshman
Dan Witke (Brooklyn, N.Y.) at fifth singles. After dropping the opening set, 6-4, and trailing early in the second set, Witke turned things around and won the second set, 6-3. The rookie jumped out to an early lead in the super tiebreaker and never looked back on his way to a 10-4 win.
At the top of the lineup, Jacob prevailed in an opening set tiebreaker (7-1) and cruised in the second set for a 7-6 (7-1), 6-0 victory. Willand was a 6-3, 6-0 winner at number three, while Balokoz nailed down a 6-2, 6-1 win at number four. Merryman came away with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at sixth singles.
The Knights return to action on Sunday with a home match against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The match is set for a 1:00 p.m. start.
