Knights Win Seventh in a Row

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. - Mount Saint Mary College won its seventh straight match on Saturday afternoon, defeating St. Joseph's College, 8-1, in Skyline Conference action.  The Knights improve to 10-3 overall (3-0 Skyline), while the Golden Eagles fell back to 3-4 overall (0-2 Skyline).

The Mount set the tone early by taking all three doubles points.  Junior Stat Willand (Sparta, N.J.) and freshman Mike Balokoz (Milford, Conn.) pieced together a strong effort in an 8-1 win at second doubles, while junior Greg Jacob (Ridgefield, Conn.) and sophomore Nate Dimmie (Middletown, N.Y.) came away with an 8-4 win at first doubles.  Sophomore Conor Merryman (Marlboro, N.Y.) and senior Bryan Pujol (East Rockaway, N.Y.) rounded out the sweep when they closed out an 8-3 decision in the third position.

The Knights claimed five of the six singles matches, highlighted by a super tiebreaker win from freshman Dan Witke (Brooklyn, N.Y.) at fifth singles.  After dropping the opening set, 6-4, and trailing early in the second set, Witke turned things around and won the second set, 6-3.  The rookie jumped out to an early lead in the super tiebreaker and never looked back on his way to a 10-4 win.

At the top of the lineup, Jacob prevailed in an opening set tiebreaker (7-1) and cruised in the second set for a 7-6 (7-1), 6-0 victory.  Willand was a 6-3, 6-0 winner at number three, while Balokoz nailed down a 6-2, 6-1 win at number four.  Merryman came away with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at sixth singles.

The Knights return to action on Sunday with a home match against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.  The match is set for a 1:00 p.m. start.
