FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - Top-seeded Farmingdale State College successfully defended its Skyline Conference championship on Saturday, defeating Mount Saint Mary College by a final score of 5-1. The Knights finish the season with a record of 14-6.
The Rams took complete control of the match with a doubles sweep. Freshman
Dan Witke (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and sophomore
Conor Merryman (Marlboro, N.Y.) hung tough at third doubles, but were eventually defeated, 8-6. Junior
Stat Willand (Sparta, N.J.) and freshman
Mike Balokoz (Milford, Conn.) fell into a 6-0 hole at number two, but won four straight games to claw back into the match. Unfortunately, it was too little, too late as Farmingdale claimed an 8-4 decision.
In singles action, Balokoz put the Knights on the board with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at fourth singles. Willand dropped a 6-3, 6-3 match at number three and the Rams would clinch the match at number two. Sophomore
Nate Dimmie (Middletown, N.Y.) played an exceptional match, but ran into a buzzsaw in tournament MVP Ryan Musalo. Musalo prevailed 6-0, 6-3.
Junior
Greg Jacob (Ridgefield, Conn.) trailed 6-4, 3-1 at number one singles, Witke was down 6-1, 6-5 at fifth singles, and sophomore
Connor Bean (Glenville, N.Y.) trailed 7-5, 3-1 at sixth singles.
The fourteen wins match a program record for the Knights, who also reached the mark in 2008.
