EDGEWATER, N.J. – Mount Saint Mary College won all six singles matches on Sunday on its way to an 8-1 victory over Yeshiva University in Skyline Conference action. The Knights (12-5 overall) finish second in the Skyline standings with a record of 5-1.
Mount Saint Mary took two of the three doubles matches, getting points at first and second. Junior
Greg Jacob (Ridgefield, Conn.) and sophomore
Nate Dimmie (Middletown, N.Y.) held on to an early break and closed out an 8-5 win at first, while junior
Stat Willand (Sparta, N.J.) paired with freshman
Mike Balokoz (Milford, Conn.) for a comfortable 8-1 win at the second spot.
Balokoz made quick work of his opponent at number four singles (6-1, 6-0) and Witke fought his way through a tough second set to claim a 6-3, 6-4 victory at number five. Needing just one more match to clinch the victory, Willand edged his opponent, 7-5 and 6-4, at number three.
Sophomore
Conor Merryman (Marlboro, N.J.) made things interesting in the second set of his match at number six, but managed a 6-0, 7-5 victory. Jacob let slip a 4-1 advantage in the second set, but held serve at 4-4 and then closed out the match with a break of serve for a 6-3, 6-4 victory. Dimmie also provided some excitement at number two singles. After losing the opening set at love, the sophomore rallied to win the second, 6-3, and then went on to win a super tiebreaker, 10-4.
The Knights host Bard College on Tuesday in non-conference action before competing in the Skyline Conference Tournament at the end of the week. Mount Saint Mary will serve as the second seed and will host a semifinal match on Thursday.
