Farmingdale Wins Showdown of Skyline Unbeatens

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Both teams entered unbeaten in the Skyline Conference, but Farmingdale State College emerged as the regular season champions with an 8-1 victory over Mount Saint Mary College on Wednesday evening.  The Knights fall back to 11-5 overall (4-1 Skyline), while the Rams improve to 9-0 (6-0 Skyline).

The Rams claimed all three doubles matches, including a tiebreaker victory at the top spot.  Mount junior Greg Jacob (Ridgefield, Conn.) and sophomore Nate Dimmie (Middletown, N.Y.) battled hard to stay in the match, but ultimately dropped the tiebreaker, 7-3.

In singles action, Mount freshman Mike Balokoz (Milford, Conn.) provided the only point for the Knights with a three-set win at fourth singles.  Balokoz won the first, 6-4, dropped the second, 6-2, and prevailed in the third, 6-3.

Fellow freshman Dan Witke (Brooklyn, N.Y.) suffered his first loss of the season at number five, falling in three sets, 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 4-6.  Sophomore Conor Merryman (Marlboro, N.Y.) also went three sets at number six.  Merryman won the opening set at love, but dropped the next two, 6-2 and 6-1.

For the second straight match, Jacob succumbed in a super tiebreaker.  After losing the first set, Jacob won the second, 6-2, only to go down in the match tiebreak by a score of 10-3.  Junior Stat Willand (Sparta, N.J.) played a tight match at number three singles, but couldn't get over the hump in a 6-4, 7-5 loss.

Mount Saint Mary returns to action on Friday with a non-conference match against Marywood University.  The start time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. in Newburgh.
