Knights Defeat Purchase, Remain Unbeaten in Skyline

NEWBURGH, N.Y. - The Mount Saint Mary College men's tennis team earned a big Skyline Conference win against Purchase College on Saturday.  The Knights (11-4 overall, 4-0 Skyline) fought hard against the Panthers who dropped to 1-2 in the conference (6-4 overall).

Junior Stat Willand (Sparta, N.J.) picked up two key wins for the Knights.  Teaming with freshman Mike Balokoz (Milford, Conn.) at second doubles, the pair won 8-4.  Willand won his third singles match in straight sets (6-1, 6-1).  Balokoz also picked up a win at fourth singles with a score of 6-3, 6-0.

After losing two of the three doubles matches and a loss at second singles by sophomore Nate Dimmie (Middletown, N.Y.), the Knights went up 4-3 in the match with wins by Willand, Balokoz, and freshman Dan Witke (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who won at fifth singles 6-0, 6-3.  The Knights sealed the victory when sophomore Connor Bean (Glenville, N.Y.) battled his way through his sixth singles match by a score of 7-5, 7-5.

The win keeps the Mount tied atop the Skyline Conference.  The Knights are back on court Wednesday when they face off with Farmingdale State College at home.  That match is set for a 6:30 p.m. start.
