HAINES CITY, Fla. - The Mount Saint Mary College men's tennis team wrapped up the Florida swing with an impressive win over the College of Staten Island on Thursday. The Knights (4-3) edged the Dolphins, 6-3.
Mount Saint Mary continued its strong doubles play, taking two of the three matches. Junior
Greg Jacob (Ridgefield, Conn.) and sophomore
Nate Dimmie (Middletown, N.Y.) won the final five games to claim an 8-4 decision at first doubles, while junior
Stat Willand (Sparta, N.J.) and freshman
Mike Balokoz (Milford, Conn.) broke early and pulled away for an 8-4 win.
In singles action, freshman
Dan Witke (Brooklyn, N.Y.) rolled his Florida singles record to 4-1 with a win at number five. Witke won the opening set and was on serve in the second when his opponent was forced to retire due to injury. Sophomore
Conor Merryman (Marlboro, N.Y.) also posted a solid win at the bottom of the lineup, claiming a 6-2, 7-5 victory at number six.
Needing just one more point to clinch the win, the Knights forced a decisive third set on courts one, two, and three. Jacob provided the clinching point with his win at first singles, taking a well-earned 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 win. Dimmie also came away with a three-set win, his third straight, at number two singles. Dimmie prevailed 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. Willand played extremely well in the second set, earning a tiebreak win to force the decisive set, but ran out of gas down the stretch. He fell 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-0.
The Knights return north and return to action on Tuesday, March 19. The Mount travels to FDU-Florham for a 4:00 p.m. start.
