Strong Doubles Effort Powers Mount

Match Results

MAHWAH, N.J.
- Mount Saint Mary College won all three doubles matches on Wednesday afternoon to spark a 6-3 victory over Ramapo College in non-conference action.  The win was the fifth in a row for the Knights, who improved to 8-3 overall.

Junior Stat Willand (Sparta, N.J.) and freshman Mike Balokoz (Milford, Conn.) set the tone with a quick start at second doubles.  The pair roared out of the gates and never let up on their way to an 8-2 win.  At first doubles, junior Greg Jacob (Ridgefield, Conn.) and sophomore Nate Dimmie (Middletown, N.Y.) controlled the net throughout the match and closed out an 8-3 victory.

The key point for the Knights came at third doubles, where senior Bryan Pujol (East Rockaway, N.Y.) and sophomore Conor Merryman (Marlboro, N.Y.) pulled out the win in a tiebreak.  Trailing 8-7, Merryman pieced together a clutch hold of serve to force the tiebreak, in which the duo eventually prevailed, 7-4.

Freshman Dan Witke (Brooklyn, N.Y.) continued his hot streak at the number five slot, claiming his fifth straight win with a 6-3, 6-4 effort.  Needing just one more point to clinch the match, Merryman held on in a tight second set for a 6-0, 6-3 triumph at number six.  Balokoz added to the strong showing for the Mount with a come-from-behind win at number four.  After losing the opening set at love, the freshman rallied to win the next two, 6-3 and 6-0.

The Knights will get a week off before returning to Skyline Conference play on Thursday, April 4.  Mount Saint Mary hosts NYU-Poly at 6:30 p.m. in Newburgh.
