MADISON, N.J. - Boosted by wins at the first three singles positions and a victory at first doubles, the Mount Saint Mary College men's tennis team won its fourth straight match on Tuesday night, defeating Fairleigh Dickinson Florham by a final score of 6-3. The Knights improve to 7-3 overall with the win.
Forced to play singles first because of FDU's court setup, the Mount jumped out to a quick start with wins at the top three spots. Junior
Greg Jacob (Ridgefield, Conn.) rebounded nicely from Sunday's loss to claim a 6-4, 6-1 victory at the top position. Sophomore
Nate Dimmie (Middletown, N.Y.) cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win at second singles, while junior
Stat Willand (Sparta, N.J.) played well in a 6-1, 6-3 triumph at number three.
Freshman
Dan Witke (Brooklyn, N.Y.) claimed a key fourth singles point for the Knights with a three-set win at number five. After dropping the opening set, 6-2, Witke switched to a more attack-heavy style and rallied to win the next two sets, 6-2 and 6-3.
Needing just one doubles point to clinch the match, Jacob and Dimmie came through at the number one spot. Leading 6-2, the pair fought hard for a final break of serve and then closed out the match on Jacob's serve. Senior
Bryan Pujol (East Rockaway, N.Y.) and sophomore
Conor Merryman (Marlboro, N.Y.) teamed for a fourth straight win at number three doubles, battling their way to an 8-4 victory.
The Mount heads to Ramapo College for another non-conference match on Wednesday. The start time is set for 4:00 p.m. in Mahwah, New Jersey.
