FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - Despite a grueling, three-set victory from sophomore
Greg Jacob (Ridgefield, Conn.) at the top of the lineup, the Mount Saint Mary College men's tennis team fell to Farmingdale State College, 7-2, in Skyline Conference action Wednesday evening. With the loss, the Knights now stand at 5-5 overall (1-1 Skyline).
The Mount trailed 2-1 after the doubles with only senior
Zach Conlon (Huntington, N.Y.) and freshman
Conor Merryman (Marlboro, N.Y.) coming through with an 8-4 win at third doubles. Seniors
Mike McNicholas (Milton, N.Y.) and Nate Ahlberg (Catskill, N.Y.) gave up an early break of serve and never recovered in an 8-6 loss at second doubles.
In singles action, Jacob provided the only point with his victory at first singles. Jacob missed an opportunity to serve out the match at 5-3 in the third, but put together a gutsy hold at 5-5 to take a 6-5 advantage. When his opponent held to force a tiebreak, Jacob won five of the first six points in the breaker, only to lose the next four. The sophomore induced an unforced error from his opponent at 5-5 and then hit a clean forehand winner to claim the breaker, 7-5., and the match.
The Knights get some much needed time off and will host Ramapo College in their next scheduled match. Start time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10.
