NEWBURGH, N.Y. - The Mount Saint Mary College men's tennis team won five of the six singles matches en route to a come-from-behind, Skyline Conference victory over Yeshiva on Wednesday evening. The Knights (8-7 overall, 3-2 Skyline) won the match, 6-3.
The Mount trailed, 2-1, after doubles as seniors Michael McNicholas (Mitlon, N.Y.) and Nate Ahlberg (Catskill, N.Y.) came away with the only point. McNicholas/Ahlberg took an 8-4 decision at second doubles.
In singles action, sophomore
Stat Willand (Sparta, N.J.) came through in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) to give the Knights their second point of the night. But the action was just getting started, as the matches at three, four, five, and six would all head to a third and final set.
First to come through was senior
Zach Conlon (Huntington, N.Y.) at fifth singles. After losing the opening set, 6-4, Conlon rallied to take the next two, 6-3, 6-1. Then, it was freshman
Conor Merryman (Marlboro, N.Y.). Merryman lost the opener, also by a score of 6-4< but dominated the second set, 6-0, and held on in a tight third set, 7-5.
Needing just one more point to clinch the match, Ahlberg finally put away his match at third singles. Ahlberg won the first, 6-1, dropped the second, 7-5, and won a nail-biting third, 6-4. McNicholas finished up a 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3 victory at fourth singles to give the Knights a 6-3 team win.
The Knights wrap up Skyline Conference play against St. Joseph's College on Saturday. The match, scheduled for 1:00 p.m., has playoff implications for both teams.
